Mission Statement:
The mission of the Fleming County Public Library is to provide services, programs, and materials to help meet the personal, educational, and professional needs of the people of Fleming County.
A. Collection Development
The library will:
- Select from the mass of available materials and organize them for easy access, focusing on books and resources that best meet the needs of the community.
B. Guidance and Assistance
The library staff will:
- Provide guidance and assistance to help people obtain the information they seek, whether in print or audio-visual formats.
C. Information and Materials
The library will provide information and materials to help people:
- Equip themselves for efficient activities in various occupations and practical affairs. This includes vocational information, parent and home education, child care, nutrition, physical health, emotional stability, budgeting, consumer information, and specialized business, industrial, and agricultural resources.
- Increase their competence to form sound judgments on public issues and encourage them to express their opinions and act accordingly.
- Increase their understanding and appreciation of literature, the arts, sciences, and the political and natural world.
- Promote personal and social well-being, and foster the development of creative and spiritual capacities.
D. Programs and Outreach
The library will:
- Initiate programs, exhibits, book lists, and other resources to stimulate the use of library materials for the enlightenment of people of all ages.
E. Community Cooperation
The library will cooperate with other community agencies and organizations to:
- Determine and meet the educational needs of the community.
- Assist these agencies with their goals through services such as programs, clinics, leadership training, special bibliographies, materials, and exhibits.
F. Resource Sharing
The library accepts responsibility for securing information beyond its own resources by:
- Collecting information about, and referring to, resources from agencies, institutions, organizations, and individuals within and beyond the community.
- Borrowing materials for patrons with serious interests when the library does not own or cannot justify purchasing the needed materials (See Interlibrary Loan Policy).
G. Lending to Other Libraries
The library will lend materials to other libraries for patrons with serious interests when the requested items are not available at the borrowing library. Patrons of FCPL have priority for the use of materials.
H. Service Balance
The library will:
- Endeavor to maintain a balance in its services for men, women, young people, and children.
- Cooperate with, but not replace, school or other institutional libraries designed to meet curricular needs.
